5 Reasons you Should Attend #WFIC17

600x300_wfic17.png

We’re now less than two months from the kickoff to the Barcelona rendition of the World Financial Information Conference and almost 400 delegates have already registered. If you haven’t yet decided whether to attend, here are a few great reasons to join your colleagues in Spain:

  1. Sessions. Learn from your industry peers in a variety of session formats: roundtables, interactive panels, and keynote addresses.
  2. People. WFIC brings together over 400 financial information executives from six continents. Experience the advantage of putting faces to names as you meet your contacts all in one place.
  3. Activities. Bring your business cards and your dancing shoes. At WFIC we aim to show you a good time in a gem of a city, while maintaining a focus on enhancing your business. You’ll attend a lot of informative sessions as well as fun events such as a scavenger hunt, a city tour, a golf tournament, and multiple gourmet meals.
  4. Industry issues. WFIC attracts high-quality speakers and engaged delegates because it is a forum for discussing complex industry issues in-depth.
  5. Networking. We aren’t talking about your run of the mill cocktail hour. Joining other financial information professionals for four days of sessions and activities allows you to get to know your fellow delegates on a deeper level. Learn together, relax together, even explore wineries in Montserrat together. Loosening up around your industry peers allows you to forge more lasting business connections.

Due to high demand, WFIC 2015 was only open to members and we expect to carry that policy forward for WFIC 2017. In order to attend, your membership must be active at least through September 27, 2017. Contact Tracey Shumpert for more information or to make sure you're eligible.

Marcy Pike Chosen as Executive Committee Secretary
Earlier this month, the FISD Executive Committee (EC) confirmed Marcy Pike (Fidelity) as Secretary of the EC.  Marcy joins the FISD member leadership team that already includes EC Chair Yousaf Hafeez (BT) and Co-Chair Steve Dickey (CBOE).  Earlier this year, the EC modified the FISD Bylaws to add the Secretary role to ensure that all three major FISD constituencies are represented within the member leadership team.

An Award for MiFID II Communication
The FISD’s Service Level & Communications Working Group is announcing recognition for a data provider that exhibits stellar communication for changes and events created via the implementation of MiFID II requirements.  In 2018 the SL&C Working Group will present an award to the data provider deemed to most closely adhere to the suggested recommendations contained in the Group’s Best Practices document.  These recommendations promote timely, accurate and detailed information in communication among members within the financial information industry.

The SL&C Working Group has presented an ‘Outstanding Data Provider Award’ for the past ten years recognizing the data provider deemed to most closely follow these recommendations.  Given the substantial impact of MiFID II implementation, members felt it would be prudent to create an additional award recognizing a provider just for their communication related to MiFID II activities.  Inquiries regarding the SL&C Working Group and this award should be directed to FISD’s Nick Merritt (nmerritt@siia.net).

Level 2 Exam Launching Soon

Certification Program.png
FISD is adding a suite of Level 2 exams to its suite of professional certifications. These exams will take a deep dive into a single critical issue relevant to the financial services industry. The first module in the Level 2 family is undergoing beta testing and will be launched very soon. Be on the lookout for more announcements about this new exam and if you’re joining us in Barcelona, be sure to stop by the FISD Professional Certification table for the first look at the new syllabus. Contact Hope Wilkes with questions.

FISD Dues Scale to Increase by 5% on January 1, 2018
In June 2017, the Board of SIIA (FISD’s parent organization) approved an across-the-board 5% increase in the SIIA dues scale.  This dues increase is the first in approximately 20 years and will affect FISD members with membership terms ending December 31, 2017 and later.  After consultation with the member leadership of the SIIA’s divisions (including the FISD Executive Committee), the SIIA Board undertook these changes as part of a comprehensive package of expense cuts and revenue increases that will provide for the continued financial health of the SIIA and its divisions.  The revised dues scale can be viewed here.  FISD asks that you consider these changes as you plan your budgets for 2018 and beyond.  While price increases are never popular, FISD management believes that this increase will enable FISD to maintain and increase its level of support for its members in an increasingly expensive environment.   If you have any questions, or would like to discuss this, please contacts Tracey Shumpert.

FISD Member Mixer - New York
Join us for food, fun, and WFIC gossip! We have too much wine and beer left over from our last educational event. We hate to let it go to waste. Would you help by attending the FISD Member Mixer on Thursday, September 7, 5:00 p.m. at OTC Markets? We promise there will be absolutely no educational content. However, you’ll have two hours to network, catch up with your colleagues after the summer, discuss your plans for Barcelona and run through our pantry.

FISD is Coming to Beijing
FISD is pleased to announce that we will be hosting our first event in Beijing on September 7, 2017 at the Thomson Reuters office. FISD Beijing will address insights into quant trading: using aggregated data feeds managed by a distribution platform to power quant programs that generate orders to electronic trading platforms.

In addition to discussing the applications and interfaces that consume data and drive quant trading, representatives from various trading organisations will discuss the use of their trading data with order management applications providers to identify key structural issues necessary to build robust closed systems.  We will also discuss regulatory and surveillance considerations for electronic trading environments.
