SIIA Welcomes New President and CEO
BIO5943_1019_compressedStarting January 2019, The Software Information Services Association (parent association of FISD) welcomed Jeff Joseph as its new President and CEO. Joseph joins SIIA after holding senior positions in major global high-tech trade associations and heading his own company, Starlight Public Affairs.  He succeeds former President and CEO, Ken Wasch, who founded the trade association thirty-five years ago, and retired at the end of December.  Jeff Joseph stated, “This is an exciting time to take the helm of this dynamic organization. Data and information are the key currencies of the 21st Century economy. With its diverse membership, policy expertise and educational events, SIIA is well positioned to lead the next wave of the Information Age. I am extremely excited to be handed the baton from Ken. I look forward with great anticipation to work with the board, volunteer leaders and outstanding staff to build the next generation of this premier Washington trade association and further the diverse needs and interests of its broad membership.”

Alternative Data Standards Working Group Meets

The group held a kickoff meeting in December and is gathering in January to define determine first projects. Buy-Side firms interested in joining the group should contact Tracey Shumpert

FISD Market Data Licensing Recap
FISD held an ad hoc event in London on Jan 17th focusing on how the industry could codify data policies from exchanges and content providers – sometimes referred to as Digital Rights Management (DRM). This was intended as a workshop to give people a broader understanding – the workshop was provided by Goldman Sachs staff and was combined with a panel discussion which included an Exchange (CME); an aggregating vendor (Refinitiv); and two consumer firms JP Morgan and our host Goldman Sachs. Hoping we might get 50 to 60 showing up we got a very pleasant shock when over 200 attended with 5 or 6 dialed in. This topic is clearly of interest to many out there and we at FISD intend to support our members and the wider industry as this progresses. There is a lot more to come.  For more information or questions, please contact David Anderson +44 (0) 1825791382.

Consumer Constituent Group Update
In January, FISD consumer members have been focused on a couple issues raised in their 2018 meetings:  (1) Machine-readable invoices and other opportunities to automate processes for processing invoices and (2) Exchange policies for use of data by Systematic Internalisers under MiFID II.  If you are an FISD consumer member and would like to learn more about these discussions in the future, contact Tom Davin

As of press time, 1,430 of your industry colleagues have passed the FISD FIA exam. Some of these people were lucky enough to have their employer finance the exam and training, then keep after them to make sure they stayed on track. The rare few have the drive to pursue the FISD FIA on their own and the discipline to direct their own studies. If you’re still riding the New Year’s Resolution wave and are ready to take your career to the next level, don’t wait for permission to start.
